This is one of the more impressive bodies I've seen - just a regular tele, but only around 3 1/2 lb and the grain is super fine and even - I actually don't think I'm going to grain fill. Doesn't have the rough feel of swamp ash I've had before.  I'm going to dye it to roughly match the fb color and do tung or tru oil, or possibly take it out to Oregon later this summer and nitro it in my dad's garage.

Pickups are going to be Lollar - P90 neck, blackface or tweed middle, special T bridge. Woohoo!

Does anyone know a source for ferrules that sit flush and don't need a countersink?

Trust me, I looked for a long time before I made up my mind. There's some on axerus that should work if their specs on the site are correct, but those are the only ones I've found.

Stew-Mac sells em', but they are for a 3/8" hole and Warmoth uses a 5/16" hole...

I just ordered a custom set of ferrules from Bill Callaham that will set flush on a Warmoth.
They were a bit expensive; he charges $20 for the ferrules + any custom work is always an extra $30.
$50 for a set of ferrules was pricey, but he made what I asked for and I really, really do not like the ferrules sticking out of the back.
Nice tele, good luck, &

Nice one! If you are going to lacquer it you will need to grain fill it.

Warmoth needs to start counter boring the bodies so the ferrules set flush.

Anyone have a good suggestion for mixing up a nice orangey golden amber from MEK dye? I have brown and red, I'm assuming I need yellow. Suggested starting ratios for mixes most appreciated.

Sound like Zinsser Amber Shellac would nail it.  Do you have a picture of what you have in mind?

I just want it to be roughly the same orangey-brown that the (kingwood) fingerboard is. Something between Warmoth's sunset orange and vintage tint. Shellac sounds like a real pain, and as you know I'm not really good at complex finishes unfortunately Tonar.
I already have red, brown, and black MEK dyes and lacquer thinner as a solvent, and a test board. I think I'm just going to buy MEK yellow from LMI. Just ordered clear waterbase grain fill from stew mac too - I give up, you guys have convinced me to grain fill everything now. I'm not doing the dang sides though! Just top and back.

Amber = yellow with a bit of brown, right? Then I add a little red at a time till I get about where I want to. I know that tung oil will darken it a bit further as well, if I decide on oil over nitro.

I might suggest a less than scientific method...  Make up the yellow dye and then add a drop or a touch of black with a paper towel that has some of the dilute black dye on it.  Add a little red this way as well.  I have the Reranch ethanol dye, and it looks like red, black and yellow dye crystals in there.  Could be tobacco brown, hard to tell.  At least 10 to 1 yellow to the rest.  Not the most reproducible, but it should work...

Thanks. I find it super annoying to pay $6 for a bottle of dye though and then $8 to have it shipped within my own country, when I know it will cost them $2. Grrrr.
You are probably right, 90% yellow 10% other is the ticket. I'm a total novice at color mixing but at least I've got a test board this time.

Quick update: I went with zinsser amber shellac and am going to finish it up with wax. I like the idea of natural non-toxic stuff on this one, no grain fill, and old-school pickups. The kind of telecaster you'd have in your 70's commune, but top-class parts and setup.
This is after two rough coats of shellac, I'll do one or two more, a careful sanding and then wax. I am happy with the color and shellac is great stuff.
What wax? What application method? Love any suggestions.
