New video: High Output Humbucker Smackdown

I was a diehard 59+JB guy for a long time. Then, when I got the Kraken (Victory's 5150 clone) the JB became just too mid-rangy for me. I EQ'd a ton to try and fix it, but wound up deciding to go another direction. Full Shred, Steve's Special (DiMarzio), Custom Custom, and finally Pegasus all got...

    Rick's TelePaul

Built this one for my son-in-law. He really wanted a Les Paul style guitar but with updated features. We settled on the Tele chambered body in Mahogany with a Swamp Ash top in blue burst. The neck is Roasted Maple/Ebony with cream dots and binding. Scahller mini locking tuners and a Gotoh...

    New Amp = Boss Katana 50 MK2 _+_ THEN _+_ upgraded to the Katana 100 MK2

I haven't changed the speaker, but the reason I got the head versus a combo was because I had two really great cabs that I wanted to keep in the rotation; a Carvin 2x12s with their version of the Celestion G12T, and a Fender 1x12 with a Eminence Legend 75 in it. I really like the Katana with...

    New Amp = Boss Katana 50 MK2 _+_ THEN _+_ upgraded to the Katana 100 MK2

I've been a Katana fan for a few years now. I actually wound up selling both Bugeras, and an old Marshall because it's such a great amp. I got the Mk 1 head and was playing it through my Carvin 2x12S (their version of the G12T speaker) and it's both clean enough and dirty enough to handle just...

    10 Albums that define you

No way could I keep it to just 10, so I split it up a bit. Early influences -- Iron Maiden - Piece Of Mind Iron Maiden - Powerslave Dio - Holy Diver Judas Priest - Point of No Return Rush - Permanent Waves Rush - Grace Under Pressure Joe Satriani - Surfin' With the Alien Jimi Hendrix - Are You...

Talk me out of this Swimming pool route nonsense (?)

Starting weight was just over 5.5lbs. It wasn't that it was overweight, but just heavier than I wanted. I wound up with that weird corner toward the bottom because I just kept shaving until I got close.

Talk me out of this Swimming pool route nonsense (?)

I got a hold of a 72 Strat re-issue body a while ago. It was made out of a beautiful piece of Swamp Ash, but damn it was heavy. When I was going to repurpose the body I did exactly what you're talking about; routing more away from under the pickguard than just the swimming pool rout. My goal was...

    Roasted Maple Neck Questions

Roasted Maple with Pearloid inlays is great stuff. I would highly recommend going all the way and getting white side dots as well. I got black on the neck for the 8-Ball and they're hard to pick out on a darkened stage.

That one discovery that changed you as a guitar player

Oh yeah. I'll second this and add that once you've mastered the various positions of the Pentatonic Minor, you realize that it's about fitting in the half-steps to get to minor scales in two shapes, major scales in one (and a half) shapes, and various modes. That truly opened up the fretboard...

That one discovery that changed you as a guitar player

Same here, both with the Charvel necks and unfinished neck woods. I still have, and play occasionally, an '87 Model 2 that is one of my favorite guitars of all time. I was a little skeptical of the raw necks until I got a Canary/Ebony neck. I'm never going back. Since then I've had...

New video: Maple vs Roasted Maple Necks

When I did the update of the 8-Ball I decided I'd go with Roasted Maple/Roasted Maple. What I found was exactly what you hear in this video. The top end is a bit brighter and the mid to low mid range is tighter. It's almost like you just took the Brightness control and gave it a 2 position...

First Warmth Neck- Roasted Maple or Vintage Nitro?

I love my Roasted Maple necks and probably won't use anything else as a neck wood again. But there is one thing to consider when using it as the fretboard material: the black side dots get lost on darkened stages. I've found that I have to lean a bit around to see the fretboard dots with that...

    Is "Standard Thin" too thin?

As usual, I'm a dissenter in the crowd. The Wizard is perfect fit for my hand since I like to stay way up on my fingertips. If I had to give that up though, the Standard Thin is also a very nice shape and size.

    Positive Grid's Spark

I was debating between the Spark and the Katana, but ultimately decided to go with the Katana since I could use it for amp, USB and audio interface, and as silent practice rig. I did like the Spark and am still heavily tempted to grab one just to keep on the desk for late night recording and...

Opinions on a couple of neck questions...

I always seem to be the outlier when it comes to hand cramping discussions, and here's why. Everything I own is either Wizard or Standard Thin profile, and my hands start cramping if I go any thicker than that. I've tried the 59 Roundback profile a few times and I like the feel of it at 1 5/8"...

Post one embarrassing photo of yourself.

Here's a real interesting one. That's me on the right with the first of many Warmoth Strats. If I remember right, that's an alder body with a Standard Thin Maple/Rosewood neck with the pre-CAD letter Explorer headstock. OFR and a S.D. Custom in it, I think. It was 83 or 84, so the hairdo and...

    Arizona turquoise dots on ebony.

Thank you!  Everyone that sees it says what a good looking guitar it is. No mention of weight, balance, playability and tone; the really important stuff.  LOL
