I have been using Minwax clear lacquer over duplicolor perfect match lacquer in my various tests and didn't have any issues. A few days ago I notice a pattern in Gtr #1 from the towel it had been sitting on. I let the clear dry for a month before I started leveling and buffing. I just looked at...
I have stripped a project back to the wood. Is there a tool or technique for stripping the paint out of the various cavities or is it not worth the trouble?
In the process of driving in the trem posts I got some cracks and chips in the finish... (Note to self, always put the posts in first) Its what I feared would happen and had my anxiety levels quite high.
Its done, so now how to fix it. Duplicolor Perfect match lacquer on alder. I am thinking...
I just completed the paint on my build. Now I need to clean some paint out of the holes to install the post inserts for a wilkinson bridge. Any suggestions on the best way to do that?
I am thinking an appropriate sized drill bit, turned by fingers would be my best option with some painters...
Is the mounting screw spacing 2 7/32" on the vintage trem body route? It appears to to be closer to 2 3/16 when I measure it but the trem diagram appears to indicate it is 2 7/32". I want to make sure I order the correct bridge. I am leaning towards the Fender vintage narrow which is 2 7/32"...
I would like to age humbuckers to better match an instrument. Would something like a Scotchbrite pad be sufficient for removing the logos and taking the shine off of the bobbins? I was also considering maybe a drop of vinegar on the pole pieces to age those. Other suggestions?
I am in the home stretch of my first build in over 15 years and the first doing a legit DIY finish. I am looking around the site for hardware etc and I come across these multi-piece ash bodies that aggressively insist that I would be insane to not acquire one at that price and build a Frankie...
I am using Duplicolor Perfect Match. I need to lay down a black base for the pearl paint that will be the finish color. Its a lacquer and each coat should melt into the previous. With that in mind, is there any advantage in leveling the black base coats back before putting the pearl coats on top...
Been testing different primers and sealers. I started with Aquacoat products. They worked well enough. Been researching the Duplicolor High build primer and primer sealer. The high build primer would be fine for closed grains like alder but I think the Aquacoat would be the choice for things...
Its on its way, just as the temps are dropping making painting in the garage difficult.... :tard:
Duplicolor dries in no time at all. If I keep the paint warm, and bring it in when done, I might be able make it work...
I used some basic blue painters tape on a project recently that turned a nice shiney clear coat milky It was Duplicolor Perfect match clear if it makes a difference.
Suggestions on whats best for use to stripe up a guitar?
I am planning to do something along the lines of the EVH stripes using metalic or pearl paints. Are there any caveats to doing that? I base coated some test boards last night. I put the red coats on top of those base coated metalics today. The base coats laid out reasonably well. The red...
The test body arrived and has a few dings in it. For $28 I am not complaining. It's a chance learn new skills for prepping for paint!
So is basic wood putty the best option to fill them? Is there a better material or technique?
Is it better to install the trem posts before or after paint? As long as the holes are paint free, I am thinking after would be the better option.
I am looking for ideas to keep paint out of the various holes in the baddy during finishing. I was considering using foam ear plugs for the trem...
I have decided to go with an alder body instead of Ash. I think it will simplify some steps until I gain some additional experience.
To that end I have been looking into the best practices and put together a finishing schedule. The guitar is going to be an alder solid body strat style with a...
I and looking at doing an EVH "homage", but not a replica. It will have stripes, but my own colors and hardware choices.
First things first.
1) I will need to grain fill and sand seal I believe. Which process should I do first?
2) Does the sealer choice need to take into consideration the...
My kid is a budding artist and would like to do a "custom guitar". I would not mind obliging if the end result would be usable in terms of the over all job. I have no equipment or significant experience. I think the end result they have in mind is something along the lines of the Satriani...
