Today's WTH news involving Strad cellos.....

Reading that article I was thinking, "who the hell buys CDs any more?". Then I saw that the date of the article is in 2004. Mystery solved.

    dilemma / hum cancelling problem

You could flip the magnet in the neck pickup and then wire it backwards. Ordinarily, wiring it backwards would put it out of phase. But by flipping the magnet you put it back in phase. Then the two slug coils will be hum cancelling. Incidentally, when you are playing with both combined, are you...

    Guitar Snobs

I have seen Katy live 6 times and have tickets for a seventh so don't even try to out-fan me there. As for what's not to like: well I watched a few bits of the live stream she did recently and while her heart's very clearly in the right place, I don't think I'd enjoy hanging out with her...

    Guitar Snobs

It's a horrible outfit, I agree. Her costume designer has done some absolutely brilliant work in the past and this is a bit of a dropped ball. Looks like it fits OK though.

    Guitar Snobs

Well, thanks to Madonna, female pop stars are expected to completely reinvent themselves with each new album. The first two pictures are from her first album where she was more guitar-focused and "girl next door". She's done a few different things for the albums since then, and for this album...

    Guitar Snobs

Yeah I'm sorry guys you're going to have to remind me who this "Katy Perry" person is. It's not ringing any bells. Actually I'm not 100% sure but I think each time it went off it may have been on a different phone. The wonders of cloud-based calendars... Yeah, whatever, but funnily enough...

I'm sorry but I can't remember who that person is.

    Guitar Snobs

Sorry about the necro-post, but for this post it seems the only appropriate way to do it. Five years ago, this post was made: At the time I remember thinking, I bet that isn't true. So I set a recurring reminder to go off on my phone each year so I could see how things were progressing. If...

Theme Park Guitar: Worth Saving? (possible work in progress)

Nothing wrong with plywood guitars. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7l3yOoasias That's a plywood Squier Bullet Strat. Go ahead and get your new pickups, and a new neck. You can definitely make it a fun guitar. Although of course if you replace the neck, is it really still the same guitar?

    Share your pickups

Here are some new ones I got: Seymour Duncan Custom Shop. All three are Stack Plus construction, best noiseless single coils there are in my opinion. The neck and middle pickups are based on the Psychedelic Strat set, which is a late 60s style set. Think Fender CS69. The bridge pickup...

Oil swirl/Gasoline rainbow/Burnt chrome body finish?

Maybe the aluminium would take electroplating, and then the heating method could be used?

Why is this the way it is (diagram)?

My recommendation with that set is to wire them all in series anyway. I've tried both ways and the volume difference is just too much.

    2 Humbuckers, 3 pots.

500K pots, .022uF caps, is my recommendation. In fact a might just use a 0.01uF capacitor for the neck pickup.

    On/On switch question

I know this is absolutely not what you asked, but have you considered using a Fender S-1 switch? Looks like this: You press on top of the pot and it stays in a bit, press it again and it pops out. I used one quite recently for exactly the same purpose - tapping a Tele bridge pickup. Worked...

    Push/push pots

Yeah, the S-1 is the best switching pot I've used, as long as you don't mind using a Strat  or Tele knob.

    250K pots with humbucker?

The counter argument to "always use 500K pots, and you can use the tone control if it's too bright - now you have more possibilities" is, "when I use 500K pots, I always turn the tone down to 7 and never up to 10 - now I have slightly less range on my tone control". In that case, obviously, you...

Ampacity of a 3-way blade switch

Use an LED bulb and half an amp will be more than enough.

Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates or '59

They're very similar pickups. They're both based on pickups from 59 LPs, the difference is that the PG is a little more ballsy, ruder if you will. Personally I really like them both, depends what you're after. The 59 can be a very sweet pickup, whereas the PG always brings some attitude.

    Grounding a DPDT switching pot

It's ok, there's mechanical connections in all the switches and pots, as well as the jack. One more won't hurt.
