Thanks for the links. I plan on doing a ton of test pieces. I certainly don’t want to give it a try on any expensive body without knowing what I need to do for the process. I’m sure I will be back here with more questions.
I’m looking for a picture of a Stratocaster with a quilted or flame, maple top. I particularly need a shot along the edge where are the maple meets the body to see if it is possible to do a faux binding.

I’m planning on doing a roasted Ash body with a quilt top veneer and I want to do it in red. Your bass came out wonderful. Did you use dye and clearcoat or did you shoot a tinted lacquer?
This is an old thread, but very useful. The YouTube video explaining how roasted ash turns brown when it is shot with clearcoat has me worried about my next project. I was going to try a Red quilt top over a clear coat roasted ash body, But if roasted ash turns brown I certainly don’t want that...
I just did the same thing on a Stratocaster body. I use the nylon wheel brush in my drill to open the grain up and deepen in the ridges. I skipped the grain filling process and shot directly over the open grain.
