Proper installation of tapered pickup rings?

Before I install my pickup rings, I want to make sure I am doing it correctly.  I mustered all my computer drawing skills to fashion the image I've attached below.  Believe it or not, those shapes are supposed to represent tapered pickup rings when viewed from the side and resting on the guitar body!

When installing tapered rings on a VIP, are the rings installed so that they are:

high on the neck and bridge sides and low in the middle (as in #1)?

low on the neck and bridge sides and high in the middle (as in #2)?

I would think they would be the same for any geetar...
For my V, I looked at pics on the website of the maker of my ebony pickup rings.
I did mine like everyone else did.  The taller side of both rings face toward the bridge.  The shorter side towards the neck.

They are for use with angled neck pockets, so like the strings, high side towards the bridge and low side towards the neck for both just like BD's pic.
